While sitting in my living room tonight, I heard my hens making a terrible racket. When I went to investigate, they were all at the side door. As it is well after dark, they should be tucked in their coop. Being free range, I allow them to come out of the pen and into the back yard, though their grain is within their pen. So what was the problem! Why weren't they on their roosts already!? Because when I went to make sure the pen door was open, this is what I found inside.
This possum was happily chowing down on my girls feed!
Bobby had gone out with me, and when I saw what he had
cornered, I hurried him back into the house. I mean this big
guy was baring some pretty ferocious teeth!
When Ken came out to see what all the noise was,
he grabbed a rake and shooed it out the gate.
It took quite a while, but the girls finally
decided it was safe enough to go back to the roost!

Oh my! Wouldn't those hens have had quite the story to talk about while laying on their roosts that night!
Glad they all stayed safe!

A lot of folks think they are harmless they are NOT! They will also get at the eggs and chicks. Kittens too!
That was quite an adventure for those hens! Poor things. Good thing you and Ken protected them! :)
Do be careful with possums around your chickens. They are the worst chicken eaters ever besides coons.

Scary those things give me the willies, sure glad he did not hurt the girls. you get all kinds of critters in your neck of the woods! Stay safe, hugs Pearl
A face only a mother could love :)
EEK! They can be mean critters too! Glad the girls were OK. :c)
You be careful they are nasty creatures. There was one on our deck a few years back and he really had an attitude. No way was he leaving. Not even with a promise of a bus ticket to anywhere he wanted to go. Guess they're smart too. LOL
