The office at my mother's apartment complex is running a patio garden contest, and today is the judging. We think Mom has the best, but even if she doesn't win one of the 4 prizes, we know that she has a beautiful place to sit and enjoy her outdoors. Mom can't plant anything in the ground as she isn't allowed, so we helped her decorate with pots, statuary, plastic fence, and wood chips. We're pleased with how it turned out!
Addition : Not only did Mom not win, she didn't even place. A woman with a plastic flower garden took second, and a balcony took 1st. She feels so bad with all the time, effort and money we put into it, but it wasn't just for the contest, we wanted her to have a pretty garden to sit at and enjoy. We still feel hers was the prettiest, and without the use of plastic plants. but better luck next year, we just have to be a little more tacky!

You've done a lot of work to make it look so beautiful! I think she should win!
Hi Laurie - I found you through Elyse's blog, "Cottage." I had to check out your site because my name is Laurie too! We have to stick together! :)
Hands down Mamma should have won!! How wonderful it is to be able to sit out there and enjoy the show! And to have your own spot to piddle around with the flowers and sit and relax! What a fantastic job you girls did. I'm very impressed.
LOL Laurie... tacky indeed! Plastic flowers won??? I think it was rigged!
You all did an amazing job for your mom, and I know she so enjoys sitting out there on her pretty porch. :c)
Well, I give her first prize! It's a beautiful spot. I love container gardens. Can't believe a plastic garden won one of the prizes.
I was at an estate sale this morning my neighbor a street over was having they are moving into a retirement complex Her back yard is gorgeous and 90%planted containers.
Plastic flowers??? Oh, my, I certainly wouldn't choose plastic flowers! Your mom's patio looks great. I'm sure she enjoys relaxing out there and that's what is important!
It seems like many times tacky wins and I just don't know what goes on there, maybe politics. Tell your mom that it's #1"in my book.
I once had a table at a bazaar and had my beautiful grapevine wreaths, lopsided, odd, some had wasps nests, birds nests, interesting bits of nature. I didn't sell one but watched people carry tacky basket arrangements with flourescent paint on baby's breath and just shook my head. Never again! They don't deserve my creations, they wouldn't appreciate them. Sorry to get wound up, tell your mom also that hers was made with love and that's what counts (especially over tacky)
Mamma Is the Winner in my book. Plastic flowers you got to be kidding. Had to be a bribe. I expound, MAMMS THE WINNER! :-) Sharon
I love your mom's garden. What a fun idea to do at the retirement center. It's much nicer to have real plants. Plastic flowers are tacky!
Plastic, YUCK! How could they? Her place looks so cozy!
Cathy
I think her yard looks so pretty! She should be proud to have good taste!
