A Little Trip North

Today, Ken and I took a little trip up the shoreline of Lake Huron, to one of my favorite little towns, Lexington. There is a store there, the General Store, that is out of the 1800's. The buildings in this block are all over a century old, and house the most unique little shops, including this one. The original wood floors creek under your feet, the old penny candy counter is a treat, and the finds in here are incredible. So you'll understand how disappointed I was to see a sign on the door "closed due to illness, will re-open February 4th."
See the window on the second floor? Even the upstairs is full of so many great finds.

So we ate lunch next door at Wimpy's Place. This is a Lexington institution! A little greasy spoon, the waitress takes your order, then cooks it on the grill in the same room as the booths. There's a treat! No plastic gloves here, bare hands prepare all your food, fix them on your plate and rearrange your frenchfries. But hey, the food is great! It put me in mind of a restaurant in our town called "Sam and Joes." It was a greasy spoon, specializing in coney dogs. Sam was this big burly guy, and when you ordered your hot dogs you'd watch him line the hot dogs in their buns, up his hairy, sweaty arm. Then he'd slop the chili, onions, and mustard on each, traveling from the top dog on down. Nowadays, we'd be mortified! But you couldn't get a better coney dog anywhere! At least at Wimpy's you see the cook wash her hands first!

Funny how our ideas change, once that would not have even caused a raised eyebrow, now..........well, it does. We had a place here called Louie's Hamburgers. He'd spit on each hand fast before he rolled each hamburger ball. Eeeeeek! Everybody went there, though.

Sounds like my kind of place!!! Rubber gloves does take something way from the taste. Today we we did our Wed. a.m. norm went to DH parents in their 90's. Then Hot Dog King for lunch. We get table but you can sit at the counter and watch your food prepared. Another haunt is What-A-Burger you go inside to order but no where to sit and eat must eat in the car or one of the two picnic tables out back behind the parking lot.
